The Masters Fantasy game is an annual fantasy experience hosted on masters.com, allowing fans to build a roster of golfers across 5 categories and compete based on real tournament performance across the four rounds of The Masters Tournament. The game includes leagues, roster management, IBM Watsonx prediction metrics to help users make informed picks.
I was brought onto the Masters game as one of my first projects at Sports Technologies with the task to implement a full redesign from Figma mocks to production across the entire game experience. The designs had already been approved and the work was translating them faithfully into production React components while maintaining the existing game logic underneath. Beyond the visual redesign I introduced several new features: IBM Watsonx performance metrics surfaced directly in the roster selection flow, live watch party functionality during the tournament, league member roster compare functionality, and a new picks category that added an additional layer of roster strategy. A later second redesign brought a more significant change, transitioning away from anonymous play to requiring users to sign in, which involved reworking the auth flow and managing the user state changes that came with it and individual league customization.
The Masters is notably different compared to my other client work, it is one of the most closely controlled brands in sports, with strict guidelines around how the tournament and its assets are represented. Building within those constraints while still shipping a meaningfully improved experience, watching the game grow over the last 4 years from roughly 150,000 active users to upwards of 682,000 required close coordination with the client and careful attention to brand consistency in a way that everyday product work does not always demand.
